DESCRIPTION:Rendez-vous en -107M. \nRuben HERMANN  10h-11h – Eco-evolutionary dynamics to the rescue\nPostdoctorant à Chrono-environnement\n&\nHeikel BALTI  11h-12h – Diversity comes at a cost\n\nDoctorant à Chrono-Environnement\n\n \n\nRuben Hermann \n\nTitle: Eco-evolutionary dynamics to the rescue\nMany natural communities are threatened to collapse due to anthropogenic stressors. In this project I aim to infer when and why such a community might be able to avert their collapse by combining empirical data\, from an existing mesocosm experiment\, with simulations from mathematical model. First I will create a model\, which can emulate the complex dynamics of the community and then apply Approximate Bayesian Computation to infer the underlying mechanisms driving this aversion. This will allow for an improved understand and prediction which communities can survive such stressors and which require targeted preservation management.\nCurriculum\nRuben completed his PhD thesis at the University of Konstanz in Germany\, investigating\, how the evolution in a prey species\, in a freshwater rotifer-algae system (predator and prey respectively)\, can rescue its threatened (non-evolving) predator after an environmental deterioration. Therefore determining a mechanism how a predator-prey system can remain resistant against abiotic stressors. In his next position\, he expanded his expertise from predator-prey to complex communities and applied\, in collaboration with Jelena Pantel at the University Duisburg-Essen\, a hierarchical statistical model to determine how communities are shaped by eco-evolutionary dynamics. The current 2-years project\, therefore builds on both previous positions and is based here at Chrono-environnement as well as at the University of Freiburg\, under the supervision of Jelena Pantel.\n  \nHeikel Balti\nTitre : Diversity comes at a cost\nComprendre comment la stabilité écologique est liée à la diversité revêt une importance cruciale dans le contexte du changement climatique mondial. Une plus grande biodiversité devrait stabiliser les propriétés globales des communautés grâce à une dynamique compensatoire\, les espèces fluctuant de manière asynchrone et se compensant mutuellement. Cependant\, les relations entre diversité et stabilité ne sont pas simples et peuvent varier d’un écosystème à l’autre et au sein d’un même écosystème\, en particulier dans les zones humides où de puissants filtres abiotiques façonnent l’assemblage des communautés et la dynamique temporelle. L’étude s’attache à comprendre comment les multiples facettes de la diversité (taxonomique\, fonctionnelle et phylogénétique) et l’identité des traits fonctionnels sont liées à la stabilité temporelle (invariabilité) et à l’asynchronisme des espèces dans la végétation de la tourbière de Frasne (SNO Tourbière – ZAAJ).\nCurriculum\nHeikel effectue sa thèse sur les dynamiques de la diversité et les réponses fonctionnelles des communautés végétales d’eau douce\, de tourbière et de forêt françaises face aux changements globaux\, sous la direction d’Arnaud Mouly.
