Brief summary of the activity
This laboratory applies analytical methods in order to determine the petrophysical characteristics of natural or synthetic geomaterials (concrete, ceramic), especially to characterize their pore structures and to quantify their fluid transport properties.

The analyzes or preparations

  • Total porosity (Nt), bulk density and solid density measurement using Archimedes’ method
  • ‘Free porosity’ or porosity accessible by capillarity after 48 h (N48) and Hirschwald saturation coefficient (S48) measurement
  • Estimation of capillary pressures and pore throats spectrum by mercury injection porosimetry
  • Gas permeability measurement on plugs using a steady state permeameter (Klinkenberg correction)
  • P-waves velocity measurement on plugs (dry or saturated with brines)
  • Electrical conductivity measurement on plugs saturated with brines, formation factor and tortuosity estimation of geomaterial pore network
  • Capillary imbibition kinetics measurement in geomaterials
  • Drying kinetics measurement of geomaterial under controlled air moisture
  • Water-vapor adsorption kinetics and isotherms in geomaterials
  • Rock specimen impregnation with colored epoxy in order to observe pore structure in thin section under optical microscope: total impregnation under vacuum and then pressure (monophasic conditions); selective impregnation under atmospheric pressure (diphasic conditions) to distinct free porosity from trapped porosity.
