Brief summary of the activity
The analysis of trace elements traces and certain isotopes on environmental samples requests extremely clean manipulation conditions exempt from external pollution (atmospheric dusts, oxidation precipitates etc.). This is particularly important for samples with very low concentrations of dosed elements (in the range of ppb to ppm ). The clean chemistry lab serves for the preparation of such samples.
The facility includes 2 rooms: a preparation room (-204K) and the clean lab as such (-205K). Both rooms are air-conditioned under pressurized and filtered atmosphere. The entering air is pulsed into the room by inlets in the ceiling (Fig. 1). The air quality is of class 10’000 (ISO 7) in the clean lab and of class 100 (ISO 5) in the laminar flow hoods.

The analyzes or preparations

  • Preparation room (-204K): Distillation of acids, mineralization of solid samples (rocks, soils, biological samples) by acid hydrolysis.
  • Clean lab (-205K): Preparation of dissolved and water samples for trace element and isotope analyses (87Sr / 86Sr; 143Nd / 144Nd, 206Pb / 207Pb) (Fig. 2).

  • 2 laminar flow hoods "Analab" of class 100 in PVC PP (Fig. 1).
  • 2 evaporation stations "Analab" of class 100 in PVC / PP (Fig. 3).
  • 1 subboiling still "PicoTrace Cupola Still" for the production of ultrapure HCl and HNO3 from reagents of standard quality (Fig. 4).
  • 1 subboiling acid washing-rinsing system "Analab CRD" for the cleaning of Teflon vessels (Fig. 5).
  • 1 desktop centrifuge
  • 1 ultra-pure water system Millipore Milli-Q Integral
