I propose to focus on two types of pathogens met in aquatic environments: Cholera bacillus, and potentially pathogenic antibio-resistant enterobacteria. I wish to find the aquatic pathways and potential sources of bacteria by taking advantage of my skills and acquiring new ones (microbial ecology, history). I want to explore from the bibliography and archives 1) the explanatory factors, ecological, hydrogeological and anthropic, of cholera maintenance along the rift and at the scale of Africa, and 2) the historical documentation of cholera epidemics in France, in order to test the hypothesis according to which the factors identified in component 1 are closely related to those determining the epidemics of the history of France. For bacteria, my first hypothesis is that they contaminate wetlands in alluvial valleys from the river (receiving effluents from STEPS) or from cultivated areas (spreading of sludge) by epigated or hypogated water flows, and that their movement can be traced from the measurement of the contamination of the different water bodies, and the genetic identity of the strains. My second hypothesis is that wetlands can potentially provide niches for these bacteria. I wish to dimension this niche with the help of laboratory and in situ experiments.
