The summer of 2018 clearly showed that fire risks are increasing also in regions that are naturally less flammable. Here, I discuss how humans have affected natural fire regimes, especially during the period of the last c. 250 years, using multiple fire proxies (macrocharcoal and fire biomarkers) from a high-resolution lake sediment core in northern Poland. A robust proxy analysis supported by comparisons with climate, land cover and historical data helps identifying an adaptive socio-ecological cycle in forest management that provides guidelines for future forest management.
