Critical zone, peatlands, hydrogeology, geochemistry, isotopes, eddy-covariance, greenhouse gas fluxes, restoration, methane cycle, water-rock interactions, climate change

My research aims to better characterise the complex functioning of the Critical Zone through a multidisciplinary approach. I am studying both the hydrogeological functioning and the carbon cycle of peatlands to improve our understanding of the future of these ecosystems (and the ecosystem services they provide) in the context of climate change. More specifically, the three main themes of my research are (1) hydrogeology (water-rock interaction and origin of water: isotopy, piezometry, dissolved elements, hydrological balance), (2) biogeochemical cycles linked to carbon dynamics, and (3) the dynamics of greenhouse gas flows between the soil and the atmosphere. This work integrates several scales, e.g. metric (gas flux) to that of the hydrogeological catchment via the ecosystem scale.

Projects :

(1) Participant in the “Peat hydrogen and oxygen isotopes – PHOXYtopes” project.
Objective: To determine the reactivity of complex molecular components of OM (humic matter) in continental surface waters, by monitoring the seasonal incorporation of isotopic signals in humic matter of different size and polarity in French and Czech peat bogs and in surface water tributaries. Franco-Czech mobility project. Researchers involved: Arnaud Huguet (UMR METIS 7619), T. Meador, P. Porcal and M. Kopáček (Soil & Water Research Infrastructure, Czech Republic), S. Coffinet and S. Gogo (UMR Ecobio, Rennes), F. Laggoun-Défarge (ISTO, Orléans), G. Bertrand (UMR Chrono-Environnement, Besançon, Montbéliard), L. Gandois (UMR 5245, Laboratoire Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Environnement), F. Huneau and S. Santoni (CNRS UMR 6134 SPE).

(2) Co-sponsor of the “MICrobial drivers of MethAne produCtion and oxidation in peatlands” project (MICMAC, SNO Tourbières) with Sarah Coffinet (UMR Ecobio, Rennes) funded by SNO Tourbières (AAP Interne 2023).
Objective: To identify the microbial communities responsible for the production and oxidation of methane in two peat bogs in the SNO Tourbières network. This involves assessing the relative diversity, activity and spatial heterogeneity of these communities along an eco-hydrological gradient and a depth gradient. Researchers involved: E. Chatton (UMR Géosciences, Rennes), S. Gogo (UMR Ecobio, Rennes), G. Bertrand (UMR Chrono-Environnement, Besançon, Montbéliard), V. Milesi (ISTO, Orléans), T. Meador (Soil & Water Research Infrastructure, Czech Republic).
