BIOremediation systems exploiting SYnergieS for improved removal of Mixed pOllutants

BIOSYSMO

BIOSYSMO is a 48-month project designed to design and optimise synergistic biosystems combining the pathways and traits pathways and traits required to achieve the most effective sequestration of pollutant mixtures. These biosystems will include combinations of bacteria,fungi and plants containing the natural or artificial pathways necessary for the degradation of pollutants. BIOSYSMO will take advantage of the natural microbial diversity by screening samples from polluted sites and locations affected by diffuse pollution to identify the natural micro-organisms already present and capable of metabolising the target pollutants. The research will be extended to micro-organisms previously identified and characterised by applying data mining tools to the genomic and metagenomic data available in the
public repositories.
