SOPAST – Exploitation of natural resources

Exploitation of resources: what impact on the territory?

The exploitation of natural resources often has a lasting impact on the environment, both in terms of the development of landscapes and the structuring of settlement and exchange networks. This line of research focuses on the study of the different situations, ranging from the exploitation of plant, animal or mineral resources to the use of moulding materials.

The research will involve various fields of activity: stone, wood, metal, bone, ivory, glass. However, these productions are always part of a site or area specific dynamic, often rural, especially in the low mountain ranges (especially Jura, Vosges, Morvan, Massif Central) or in the Arctic zone.
The research will concern different fields of activity: stone, wood, metal, bone, ivory, glass. However, these productions are always part of a site or area specific dynamic, often rural, especially in the low mountain ranges (especially Jura, Vosges, Morvan, Massif Central) or in the Arctic zone. To understand the emergence and development of an artisanal or industrial production site, one must take an interest in the technical processes used and go beyond the mere chain of operations to examine the work of the technician, his actions and his skills. The study of the relationships between artisans and consumers leads to recognize the exchange networks inherent to each production site, involving both the trade of products and semi-products and the circulation of people and their know-how. The same applies to the processing plants and the construction sites where the raw materials are used.
